Many industry veterans believe that the best TV ever made was the Pioneer Elite plasma. They used their KURO technology combined with the very fast refresh rates associated with the plasma technology to deliver the best picture in the industry.
The problem with the Pioneer Elite TVs was that Pioneer mismanaged their TV business model. Although the TVs were far superior to the competitors, they thought they had to be price competitive. They did not understand that the premium product could be sold at a premium price. So they lost a few hundred dollars on every TV they sold. Even when the TVs were on back-order, which was quite often, we would see price reductions. After losing ~$750M per year for a few years they finally closed the TV division. To this day, the Pioneer Elite Plasma TVs are considered by many to be the best TV ever made.
Now, Sharp has resurrected the Elite brand and they are teaming with Pioneer to bring the Sharp Elite TV to market. The Sharp Elite TVs are great and considered by many to be the best LED TVs on the market. Another benefit of the new LED line is the fact that they are very bright, energy efficient, and come in much larger sizes than the old plasmas.
