This is one of my favorite San Rafael home theater / media room projects. We basically did networking and a/v design and installation through out the entire home. For the purposes of this blog, I want to concentrate on three primary areas; the kids play area, the master bedroom and the downstairs living room. There was a fourth area dubbed ‘the scotch room’, that I talked about in a previous post. Please click here to read it.
The first area is where the kids play and do their homework. This area is next to the kitchen, which makes it a convenient place to have a media set up. The customer wanted something practical, but of exceptional quality. So therefore, we designed and installed the following electronic home theater equipment in this space.
TV=Samsung UN55D8000 Ultra Thin 3D LED 1080p HDTV
Here’s a closer look.
All of the audio components were hidden in a well ventilated media rack [shown below]. Ventilation is crucial in order to disperse the heat generated by these high end components that tend to get very hot. Overheating can damage components and render them useless, resulting in more money spent by the customer on replacement and/or repairs.
Audio=Integra DTR 30.3 Surround Sound Receiver. Other misc. equipment includes a Sony Blu Ray player as well as some customer furnished equipment.
The next room I want to show you is the master bedroom. For this area we also used the Samsung Ultra-Thin 55″ 3D TV and the Integra DTR 30.3 Receiver. We also installed in-ceiling Speakercraft speakers and an 8″ Cinema Subwoofer.
Here’s a picture of the Speakercraft in-ceiling speakers
The final area is the Recreation Room. In the rec room we again installed the Samsung D8000 series HDTV. However for this bigger space, the client went with a larger size, a 65″. This ultra-thin 3D LED television carries the same D8000 designation and in case you are interested, the model # is UN65D8000
Here are some photos of the final installation.
In this ‘straight-on’ view you can see the Samsung 65″ tv, as well as the in-wall Speakercraft speakers and subwoofer. As a side-note, we also installed Lutron lighting controls for the overhead lights you see in the pic below.
Of interest, is the client’s full bar just to the right of the home theater in their Rec Room.
Sonos Zone Players were installed through out the house to provide whole-house music.
MX-980i Universal Remote Control [URC] with recharging base were used on all of the home theater systems.
Additional technology and equipment used: Liberty Cable, Panamax Power, Sanus Wall Mounts, Niles A/B Switch, Salamander Designs, Middle Atlantic, Active Thermal Management, Parasound Zamp, Sony Blu Ray player,
The Entertainment and Technology installed will provide countless hours of enjoyment for the family.

Convenience, lower energy costs, remote video monitoring and surveillance are just some of the benefits that homeowners associate with Home Automation. These features alone should be enough to convince you to automate your home with the latest and greatest technology.
However, if you’re still on the fence about starting a Home Automation project, take a look at these 3 often overlooked benefits.
1. Furniture & Floor Fade.
Automated shades can cut down on the harmful UV rays that the sun emits into your home on a daily basis. Moreover, you can program your Automated shades to close and open according to the placement of the sun, thus protecting your fine furniture and hardwood flooring from all of the negative aspects that sunlight brings to the decor.
2. Integrated Control of All Home Systems.
Home Automation brings together all of the home control systems that were traditionally separate [climate control, lighting, security, etc]. By integrating all of these home systems into one automated environment, you are essentially creating a single network for home control. This marriage of separate systems now offers a new lifestyle of convenience and efficiency that would not be possible otherwise.
3. Remote Control Saves you time = $$$$
Remote control [from your iPhone, iPad or other mobile device] is one of the biggest, and most often overlooked benefits of Home Automation technology. Having the ability to arm, disarm or monitor your home security system remotely, while you are away from your home, is priceless. Imagine the time you would save by not having to return home because you forgot to set the alarm, or being able to disarm your system remotely so your neighbor can get in to feed your cat when you are on vacation? How about the ability to monitor and set the thermostat in your home remotely? This would come in handy if you needed to adjust the temperature in your home when you are away.
As you can see, the benefits to Home Automation are far reaching and go beyond the most obvious benefits. I would love to have past home automation customers share their thoughts and perhaps they have stumbled across an overlooked benefits that others might enjoy hearing about.
